ATLANTA DESIGNER SHOUT OUT!! Corey Harris
Sunday, October 25, 2009
This week’s designer shout out is an August graduate from the industrial design school at Auburn University. Corey is still working on his sketching and 3D skills as he searches for a position. He has recently completed an internship with Techtronics Industries in South Carolina. Give him some feedback and look for more great work from Corey as we will continue to stay in touch with this promising designer. Here is a selection of his work with a description from Corey.
Muse
My goal on this project was to create a comfortable, functional, and inspirational space for musicians to practice and learn music. What I ended up creating was a unique piece of furniture that the user could both love while using it and love seeing it. The main idea behind the design was to incorporate a music stand that the user could adjust and use. I ended up creating a 360 degree rotating music stand so both right and left handed players could enjoy the product. It is designed to be comfortable and relaxing to sit in with its relatively low 17" seating height. I also provided footrests so the user could switch their foot to the desired height. All the details on the chair are modeled after details on a guitar. The two toned legs represent the two tones used on traditional acoustic guitar, the steel footrests mimic frets on the fret board, and the seat back parallels the classic headstock on guitars.
Project 2:
Aphelion - Alarm clock redesign
This project was aimed at creating a new way for an alarm to function and making the vital controls easier for the user to understand. I wanted to make to user interact with the alarm from the second the alarm goes off by having to retrieve a ball and replace it for the snooze function. This would work great for those people who can never get out of bed. When the alarm clock goes off it launches the ball across the room and forces the user to get up and replace it to stop the alarm. If the user does not switch off the alarm the process will be repeated every 10 minutes.
Project 3:
QuickSight - Point and Shoot Digital Camera
In my product semantics studio we were given a challenge to create a hand held product that the user could fully understand and use without having to look at an instruction manual. I though what better than a point and shoot camera! I designed it so the user holds it and uses it with instinct. The process is simple you point the camera in the direction you want to shoot and you preview the image through the peep hole and the squeeze the trigger. It is primarily designed for recreational use with teens and young adults. When I created this product I envisioned it not being an expensive product, but a unique and fun experience.
Project 4:
Wingman - Laptop Innovation - This project was sponsored by Dell computers and they wanted us to find new ways of making the laptop better for the college user. My concept focused on making the user respect and take care of their computer more by making the computer do something special for the user. That special feature is an integrated external mouse that can be stored and charged in the computer and be ejected at any time and used anywhere. This would enable the user to never haul anything but the laptop with them to class, making the user's life easier.
